Want to Live? Make Sure Enough Nurses are Near

Research found a 2% increase in risk of death for each nursing work shift that was understaffed.

The study included ~198,000 patients, during ~177,000 8-hour nursing shifts. Patients averaged three such shifts, meaning their risk of dying increased 6+%compared to patients with access to fully staffed nursing shifts.

Avoid Electronics Before Bed to Sleep Better

Research found that 95 % of Americans use electronics within an hour before bed. Such usage impairs sleep-onset because the artificial light can prevent melatonin release (our sleep hormone).

50+% of teenagers read and sent text messages every night just before bed compared to 15% of those in their 30s and 5% of baby boomers. No suprise - the teenagers who are the sleepiest of all while baby boomers get the most sleep. This is worrisome as most teens get 2 hours less sleep than the recommended 9.

Brand Name Changes Behavior Even Sans Product

An experiment found that video gamers driving a Red Bull car were more reckless than those driving cars with the logos of other drinks.

70 volunteers raced identical cars with different paint jobs (Guinness, Tropicana, Coca-Coca, Red Bull, or plain green). The Red Bull drivers after the game said they didn't realize their behavior ... meaning brand marketing could affect people's personalities...

Dog Handlers Influence Dog's Thinking

Research finds that when dog handlers believed drugs or bomb materials were present, their dogs did as well - even when there wasn't.

In a 4 room experiment, researchers left the 1st room clean, the 2nd with taped red paper, the 3rd with hidden Slim Jims, the 4th with red paper taped to Slim Jims. Handlers were told they might smell weed or gunpowder up to 3 times/room, sometimes marked with red paper - despite there being no scents. Still, teams called 225 false alerts — most often where red paper was found but irrespective of the presence of Slim Jims.
